INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup (200 grams) sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • 4 cups (about 340 grams) fresh or frozen cranberries
  • zest and juice of one orange, or 1 teaspoon of orange extract for extra flavor
  • a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for extra warmth

DIRECTIONS

  1. Rinse the cranberries under cold water and pick out any stems or blemished berries.
  2. In a medium saucepan, dissolve the sugar in 1 cup of water over medium heat.
  3. Add the cranberries to the saucepan and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and let the cranberries simmer. You’ll hear them pop – that’s normal.
  4. Add orange zest/juice or cinnamon/nutmeg.
  5. Continue to simmer the sauce for about 10 minutes, or until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens. Remember, it will thicken more as it cools.
  6. Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool to room temperature. It will thicken as it cools.
  7. Store in the refrigerator until serving. It can be made several days ahead of time.
